October 30 brought an unusual 6″ snowfall to Hopkinton, providing an opportunity for a wonderful walk in the woods on the following sunny day. With snow cover and little wind, the woods are eerily quiet, where the loudest sound are your footsteps, your breathing, and an occasional running stream. It doesn’t take fancy equipment to get out on the trails: if packed from hikers, any old boots work. If it’s a fresh snow, it’s nice to have gaiters to keep the snow out of your boots. If it’s a deep snow, you will need snowshoes, but decent snowshoes that work on the relatively flat trails in Hopkinton can be bought for less than a good pair of shoes. Best of all, winter walking is a great workout!
